The Sanibel Fishing Pier is
located near the lighthouse beach and is open for fishing 24 hours. The beach,
bay and causeway are all popular spots for fishing. Many of the local marinas
provide boat rentals, and there are many local guides that know the waters and
the fishing hotspots. FISHING LICENSE INFO:
Fishing: Most residents and visitors must purchase licenses for fishing in salt
or fresh water. You can purchase a license at The Bait Box on Periwinkle Way;
at Bailey' Center at the corner of Tarpon Bay Road and Periwinkle Way; at
Tarpon Bay Recreation; at Jensen's Marina; and at all the marinas. Rules and
regulations on size and bag limits plus open and closed seasons change. Most
bait stores distribute free lists published by the Florida Marine Fisheries
Commission. You do not need a license if you are: under 16; over age 65 and a
Florida resident; a Florida resident fishing in salt water from a dock, bridge,
jetty, pier or other structure connected to land; or fishing from a boat
covered by a Vessel Saltwater Fishing License. The Tax Collector's office and
bait shops list criteria for residency.
The Sanibel Lighthouse
On Sanibels Eastern tip, also known as
Point Ybel, stands the 104 Historic Sanibel Lighthouse. The lighthouse
was requisitioned in 1883 and was officially lit on August 20, 1884 by keeper
Dudley Richardson. Standing at the foot of the lighthouse are two dwellings
that housed the subsequent keepers until 1949, when they became home to
employees of the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge. The
City of Sanibel took over management of the lighthouse property in 1982, and
the dwellings now house city employees. The lighthouse beach as it
is known by the locals, is a popular beach for shelling to tourists and locals
alike.
Shelling
Sanibels unique shape compared to
other barrier islands along Floridas Gulf Coast is the main reason it has
been ranked tops in the world for shelling. The southern end of Sanibel scoops
East-West and is a virtual catchers mitt for various kinds of shells from
the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and the Atlantic Ocean. So many of the
islands visitors engage in the The Sanibel Stoop in search of
the coveted Junonia, among other beautiful shells found on the Beaches of
Sanibel and Captiva.
J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife
Refuge
Named after political cartoonist with an eye
toward conservation Jay Norwood "Ding" Darling, the refuge was created to
safeguard and enhance the pristine wildlife habitat of Sanibel Island, to
protect endangered and threatened species, and to provide feeding, nesting, and
roosting areas for migratory birds. Today, the refuge provides important
habitat to over 220 species of birds. Winding through the refuge is the
Wildlife Dr., a 5 mile paved road that offers excellent viewing of birds,
Alligators, manatees, and the occasional otter sighting.
Bailey-Matthews Shell
Museum
The Bailey Matthews Shell Museum opened in
1995 and features numerous exhibits for students, scientists, and shell
enthusiasts. The museum offers diverse educational programs and is a must see
for both residents and visitors to Sanibel and Captiva Islands.
Bike Paths
One preferred method of touring Sanibel
Island is by bicycle. Sanibel has over 25 miles of paved bike paths that wind
their way through quiet neighborhoods, along preserved lands and lakes and
ponds to right in front of Sanibels shops on Periwinkle Way. From the
lighthouse to Captiva, Sanibels bike paths will lead you wherever
youd like to go.
The Schoolhouse Theater
The Schoolhouse Theater is Sanibel
Islands professional musical theater and offers Broadway caliber talent
in an intimate atmosphere. The theater offers the best family oriented
entertainment in one of the worlds most beautiful vacation destinations.
Actors come from across the country to perform here.

Home Inspections >About Termites
Most real estate offers require an inspection by a licensed exterminator to determine that the house doesn't have termites or other wood boring insects. The inspector will look for two signs in deciding whether or not to pass a house--an active termite infestation and evidence of a past infestation.
If your house does not pass the termite inspection, get a list of qualified exterminators from your real estate agent. Find out what treatment options they offer and what they charge for the service. Exterminators are usually quite competitive. If your home was treated for a past infestation, the company which performed the extermination may be willing to re-certify your home without a second treatment. Arrange for the termite inspection as early as possible, so you will have time to determine the best way to get rid of them, if they are found.
